Inclusive Teen Leadership Board

Applications to join the FCVA Inclusive Teen Leadership Board are being accepted until August 30, 2024.

Open to teens in grades 8 – 12

The Friendship Circle Inclusive Teen Leadership Board (TLB) currently has members with and without disabilities from varying high schools throughout the community including: Collegiate, Deep Run High School, Hermitage High School, Glen Allen High School, Miller School of Albemarle, Moody Middle School, New Community School, Patrick Henry High School, and Shaarei Torah of Richmond.

Friendship Circle’s Teen Leadership Board was created to connect teens with the disability community. As a participant, you will develop leadership and interpersonal skills, build self-esteem, join leadership roles as advocates, and form life long friendships.

Expectations

General Expectations:

  • Be an ambassador of Friendship Circle of Virginia’s mission to build an inclusive community, one friendship at a time
  • Be an active volunteer 
    • Participate in F@H, or
    • Has attended at least 3 birthday circles and/or community events in the past
  • Be responsive (reply to communications within 48 hours)
  • Any elected leadership positions must be taken seriously
  • Parents must understand the commitment approve participation 
  • Bring a friend to an event or recruit one person to be a teen friend (from school, clubs, sports, etc)

Meetings: Meetings are held monthly, in person, from September – June

  • Attends monthly TLB meetings with up to 3 excused absences
  • Actively participate in meetings

Ambassador Projects:

  • Actively take part in the 2 ambassador projects during the program year: 1 in the fall and 1 in the spring (annual event at Loving Acres).
  • Have an active role for the TLB ambassador projects chosen at the beginning of the year

Events:

  • Birthday Circles
    • Assisting with monthly Birthday Circles
    • Show up 15 minutes before a Birthday Circle to be matched with a friend with disabilities
    • Show up 30 minutes prior to each event to help set up or be ready to be matched with a friend (not required)
    • Help clean up after events
  • Fundraiser
    • Take part in Friendship Circle’s annual online fundraising campaign by creating a fundraising page and sharing it with your family and friends
  • Walk N Roll and Disability Inclusion Day
    • Help with setup/cleanup, or
    • Volunteer during the event (man a table, bounce houses, etc.)
